The 10th International Mobile Innovation Screening & Smartphone Film Festival is part of this event, with a collection of short films inclusiv my " No Comment". It’s a smaller festival than last year’s, but shows like YUMMY’s demonstrated huge technical improvement in translating some fraction of the excitement, the “liveness” of live performance, into a digital format.Īnd the odd show didn’t have to pretend – notably livestreamed comedy from the Game Boys in Hey Hey It’s Lockdown, which gave us immediate access to the mayhem of performance in real time.November 13 & 15, 2021: second Mobile Studies Congress at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne) Hawthorn Campus and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. If some responses had a whiff of desperation behind them, artistic resilience and vitality shone through. The Indigenous drag queen compèred the event in flamboyant style – bedecked in black Edna glasses and an Aboriginal flag frock dusted with diamantes – and she was very quick on the draw. The show seemed like featherlight froth, until it took aim at colonial narratives underpinning the western genre, thanks to the satirical brilliance of Foxy Empire. This drag cabaret spaghetti western went wild queering classic tropes, and came with all the trimmings – the immortal music of Ennio Morricone, sepia intertitles, chaps and frills and epic showdowns, a ‘tied-to-the-tracks’ rope bondage sequence, you name it.
